Emily's select committte work to fight age discrimination recognised

Age Concern have recognised Emily's work to fight age-discrimination in their latest political bulletin. The bulletin is widely circulated to all MPs and members of the House of Lords.

Emily quizzed the chair of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, Trevor Phillips, about age discrimination in the provision of goods and services during a hearing of the Communities and Local Government Committee. Emily asked the question after speaking at Age Concern Islington's ‘Your Rights' day to promote people's access to benefits and awareness of their other rights.

At the evidence session Emily said:

"Age is not currently protected through goods and services legislation. I met Islington residents at an older people's event organized by Age Concern [who] made it perfectly clear that they certainly feel discriminated against as older people."

Mr Phillips said:

"I have no doubt it is going to be one of the issues that a new, Single Equality Act will have to tackle, and tackle positively, to ensure that there is not unjustifiable discrimination on the grounds of age, whether that is to do with youth or older people."
