Breaking the Silence - Day 4 (20 May)

8 June 2007, 7:32pm

I went from 17-21 May to Palestine with CAABU. The last time I had been to Israel and the West Bank had been in the early 80’s. It came as a real shock to see how much the area had changed. This is the blog from my fact-finding trip.

After waiving Greg off in his shared car back to Ramallah (no Mercedes for him!) we met up with Yehuda Shaul from Breaking the Silence.

This is an organisation of former soldiers who insist that they should tell the story of their military service and talk about what it has done to them. Here was another remarkable and highly political young man. He spoke with great passion.

I sat in the garden of the hotel whilst he sat square on the edge of his seat with his hands clasped together. He occasionally pushed his glasses up his nose with a finger. At some stages in his story, he rocked backwards and forwards. After a while, I realised I had become so mesmerised by what he was saying, I began to wonder if I'd stopped breathing!
