Government steps in with £32m to save Packington re-build

Packington re-build given green light following MP's lobbying

Plans to re-build the Packington Estate were finally given the green light last week - after the Government agreed to step in with a £32million funding package following representations by Labour MP Emily Thornberry.

Soon after being elected in 2005, Emily Thornberry wrote to the Housing Minister Yvette Cooper MP, explaining the need to re-build the Packington because of serious concerns about safety - and stressing the importance of making sure the money was available for this to happen.

Last December, residents from the Packington Estate voted to transfer the estate to Hyde Housing Association, to be demolished and rebuilt with modern affordable homes. However, the cost of the works was estimated to be so great that Hyde Housing has been unable to fund it alone, and so the future of the re-build hinged on extra money from the Government.

In response to the residents' vote and the representations from Emily Thornberry, the Minister last week approved £32million funding to ensure the re-build can now go ahead. The Minister also confirmed the homes will be re-built to 21st century standards and will provide the residents with new community facilities.

Emily said:

"When I spoke to the Housing Minister two years ago about the Packington, she understood the need for bringing the estate up to 21st century standards. I am very pleased that by working with her I have been able to secure agreement on the money we need."

Housing Minister Yvette Cooper MP said:

"Emily has made clear just how badly this investment is needed and how important the money could be to help improve local peoples' lives. Hardworking MPs like Emily, who have good local knowledge, are not only an asset to their communities, but they play an important role in making sure Ministers are aware of the priorities in their local areas."
